Li Tsu-liang (Lau Chong-yan) is newly widowed and leading an impoverished life with two young sons (Huang Kun-hsuan and Cheng Pak-lam). He attempts to make a fortune at the horse-racing track, but is subsequently entangled with the loan sharks. Li is debt-laden while his sons are harassed by debt collectors. More heart-wrenching events begins to unfold….

Rarely has a title been more accurate, but considering the action which fills this film, it also could have been called THE BRUTAL FIVE or THE CRUEL FIVE or THE VICIOUS FIVE.... if the title referred to the villains, that is. In any case, the heroes are certainly outnumbered as gang after gang of robbing rapists invade this poor town. At first the fiends just want a village locksmith to help them open a stolen safe, but soon the entire community is being held hostage, threatened, and tortured. Although reminiscent of THE SEVEN SAMURAI, the director and his revered action choreographers, Liu Chia-liang and Tang Chia, design each of the many struggles with gritty depravity and desperate power. The result is an especially realistic, even grueling, exercise in suspense.

But to CHINATOWN KID'S credit, the incredibly violent fights are immensely satisfying as man on the run Tan Tung (Alexander Fu Sheng), one by one defeats each triad gang related venom while succumbing to the seductive powers of the ultra-sexy Shirley Yu only to realize that, in typical Chang Cheh style, materialism and heroism leads to nihilistic desecration.

This follow-up to the classic THE 36TH CHAMBER OF SHAOLIN shows kung-fu's the illustrious Liu brothers at their lethal best. Director Liu Chia-liang has more than a few new kung-fu tricks up his monk's sleeve as he transports brother Gordon Liu Chia-hui back to the Ching Dynasty and the Shaolin Monastery. And not just any part of the monastery, but the clandestine 36th chamber, where the most advanced methods of kung-fu are taught to the deserving few. Alas, Gordon is not one of the anointed elite and must find a way to covertly observe the secret training in order to obtain the skills necessary to battle the hated Manchus. Though the movie's conclusion is never in much doubt, the Liu Brothers have a lot of fun getting from points A to Z with plenty of murder and mayhem in between.

Sun Chung had been recognized as an expert comedy and crime thriller director, but he was to gain even greater acclaim for his soulful, powerful, intelligent, and beautifully-made martial arts epics. This stands alongside The Deadly Breaking Sword and The Kung-fu Instructor as one of his very best. It's not so much the plot - a master swordsman protects a treasure chest on a dangerous journey - that makes this great, but what Sun does with it, inspiring the cast and crew to some of their finest work.

Cheng Chang-ho had already established his filmmaking fame in Korea when he was invited to join the Shaw Studio. He created new fame in Hong Kong by directing (and sometimes writing) such action epics as Valley Of The Fangs, The Swift Knight, and this tale of a decapitating swordswoman who will let nothing stand in her way when she falls in love with a bandit’s son. Chiao Chiao, made famous in One-Armed Swordsman, is the girl who won’t let such trifles as craniums keep her from freeing her man from jail. The one villain who manages to keep his head (in every definition of the phrase) is Fan Mei-sheng. The success of this film really helped the director get ahead in just two years he was to helm the very first internationally successful kung-fu film: King Boxer.

Ting Chih-hua, pert and pretty, plans to steal a fabulous diamond ring from a shop. She orders the ring and tells the manager, Tang Chi-tu, to deliver it to psychiatrist Chow Tung-ming. He is to impersonate her husband. At the same time, Chih-hua calls on Chow and tells him that Tang, whom she claims is her husband, will be visiting him for treatment. Tang takes the ring to the psychiatrist's clinic. In the waiting room, Chih-hua receives the ring. Tang enters the psychiatrist's office to collect payment for the ring. Since Chow is under the impression that Tang has come to him for consultation, a series of misunderstandings ensue before the two men realize that they have been duped. Chih-hua, in possession of the ring, flies with her brother Wen-hua, from Hongkong to Singapore. To by-pass customs, Chih-hua slips the ring into the pocket of wealthy Chang Chih-yen. In the city Chih-hua and her brother lose Chih-yen and search frantically but unsuccessfully for him. One day, they spot Chih-yen and attractive Jennie Wang by a swimming pool. Chih-hua goes to search Chih-yen's car. Chih-yen and Jennie enter the car and drive off. Chih-hua is discovered inside and she lies that she is an old friend of Chih-yen's. Jennie, jealous and angry, pushes Chih-yen out of the car and drives Chih-hua home. Later, Chih-hua breaks into and ransacks Chih-yen's home for the ring. She is discovered by Chih-yen who hands her a jewel box supposedly containing the ring. On returning home, she finds only a razor in the box. Meanwhile, Chih-yen learns that the ring is stolen property and that Chih-hua's responsible for the theft. Chih-hua again visits Chih-yen at home. There is an amusing incident in which coffee is spilt on Chih-hua's dress and just as she is changing it, Jennie enters the house. Ever suspicion, Jennie dashes out of the place in a huff. Chih-hua and Chih-yen spend the night together. The following day, Chih-hua once more calls on Chih-yen. She reveals that her father is ill and the family is in financial difficulty. She had lied to them that she had gone on a tour of Europe. By now, Chih-yen has fallen for Chih-hua. He contacts Tang and tells him to go to Singapore for payment of the diamond ring. Tang collects his money, everything's settled and Chih-yen and Chih-hua are wed.
